Between the bays of Episkopi and Apokrousi is one of the most significant places in the history of Kythnos island. Vryokastro or Rigokastro was the ancient capital of a Greek island which at the time was already called Kythnos according to historical sources. Today, visitors will be enchanted by the mountainous terrain at Vryokastro, as well as the diverse flora (you will discover a great variety of aromatic herbs) and the uninterrupted view of the Aegean sea, including the stunning Kolona "double" beach.
Starting from the area of the ancient aqueduct of Vryokastro, we hike uphill through a natural herb garden of sage and thyme. At the top lies the ancient Kythnos Acropolis with its remnants of ancient dwellings, sited harmoniously beside the stone houses of the last century. Later, we head south to the ancient port of Kythnos island, circling the cape which ends at Apokrousi beach. Apokrousi is the largest and one of the most beautiful island beaches. Because of its unique location, it is shielded from the wind and offers a fertile environment for seaweeds. After listening to what your guide has to say, you may of course enjoy a swim at Apokrousi beach. On the way home, we walk a shorter route by a beautiful path where you will be able to catch the lovely scent of almost all Kythnos herbs.
